Grasslands Brewing out of Tallahassee will be opening early next year. To get ready for the opening owner/brewer Gabe has been brewing test batches of beers and sending them into the world for your review. All you have to do to get one of these delicious brews is send him an email and tell him you want to be a Grasshopper. I will be sitting down with him this weekend to tell you all about it but in the mean time I recently got a bottle of their LeeRoy the Red Imperial Amber Ale (Batch 5). It’s time for another Brewcast, and on tap this week is a Homebrewer you MUST educate yourself on, Johnathan Wakefield. He covers the beer spectrum from fruit packed Berliners to Imperial Stouts aged in Johnny Walker Barrels. Oh, he also had two of the #1 Best Rated Beers In The World (Sour Ale and Low/Moderate Alcohol) in 2012 on RateBeer.com (They are labeled Cigar City pilot Series). Seriously! He was kind enough to have me over at his house to talk about the exciting future of his brewery (J Wakefield Brewing), his collaborations with Doug from Cycle Brewing/Peg’s Cantina and Cigar City, plus a lot more. Ahh Gainesville! Some know it as the home of the University of Florida, great college Baseball, Basketball and Football teams, Tom Petty, Against Me! or the fun nature attractions, but I bet you didn’t know it has a great fast growing Craft Beer scene! Gainesville features 3 breweries, at least 3 well stocked beer stores and enough craft beer bars to keep you bar hoping till its last call. I recently made the trip up I-75 to spend some time with my friends at Swamp Head Brewery, located just seconds off the Archer Road exit (384). I sat down with owner Luke and Brandon the head of their “Tactical Marketing” department to cover a slew of topics like their new bottling line, up-coming bottle releases, future brewery expansion, holiday gift sets and more. Want to be the first to know what Swamp Head has in store for you in the future? Click here to hear the audio interview with Luke and Brandon. Continue reading
Gainesville’s Swamp Head Brewery says their next bottle release will be out by the end of summer and it will be their Imperial IPA 10-10-10. This one though has a bit of a twist compared to the 10-10-10 you have had before on tap. They’ve been aging this one in Bourbon barrels that according to the label, held Kentucky bourbon for the past 20 years. The brew will be a part of their Spasmodic Release Series and will mark the breweries 4th bottle release to date. Once a release date is announced I will post it. Also I talked with Luke and Craig the other week to set up an interview, and that should be done and up in a month or so. Until then check out the Swamp Head Pilot Series and brewery review.

Lions, Tigers and Beer… Hell yeah! WaZoo at the Lowry Park Zoo in Tampa is coming up on August 4th and if you’ve never been, you’re missing out on what USA TODAY says is one of the “Top 10 Beer Festivals in the USA.” Tickets were just put on sale, and I would recommend picking them up early. I made it out last year and it was a blast. Click more to check out my recap and photos from last year.
